Sex on Sunday: cougars threaten google, cctv rules the UK, and why Europe needs migration

Why should Google be sexist about just this issue?

Cougar Life accuses Google of sexism

The founder of a Toronto-based dating website for older women looking for younger men is accusing Google of sexism after the web giant labelled Internet ads for “cougar” dating sites as “non-family safe,” while ads for many sites promoting liaisons between older men and younger women remain “family safe.”

Europe, with its treasured welfare-state indulgences, is going to find it hard to adjust to leaner times

The central mystery that remains is why the UK embraced surveillance culture far more enthusiastically than other countries, turning us into perhaps the most watched nation on earth.

Day of Europe, and immigration in the EU, by Bruce Miller

The combination of ageing populations and a contracting domestic labour force is set to have drastic consequences for Europe. Left unchecked, it will translate into unsustainable pressure on pension, health and welfare systems, and into negative outcomes for economic growth and taxation. If Europe is serious about moving towards a knowledge society, efforts to enhance economic efficiency and upgrade the skills of the existing population must be complemented with active measures to address this demographic challenge. Not least, it must include a concerted effort to make the EU an attractive destination for immigrants. Without migration, the EU will not be able to meet future labour and skills shortages.

I would like to comment on the last point. If it were true that we need immigrants to take care of the elderly, the population would grow exponentially, because in a later stage these same immigrants will grow old too, and then we need even more immigrants to take care of the elderly immigrants. And then the latest wave of immigrants will grow old too, and then …….. It’s cold a Ponzi scheme.

I think that would not be a good reason to support immigration.

As to why the UK embraced surveillance systems when others did not, I have two words:

    Jamie Bulger.

After that, we began to demand CCTV evidence. When Jean Charles was gunned down by police in the tube we demanded to see the CCTV footage (and were initially told that the cameras were “not working”). When a child or a woman goes missing, we ask for footage. The 7/7 bombers were photographed getting onto a train at Luton.
I’m not saying it’s a good thing necessarily, but it’s all about media coverage of crimes. It’s created an expectation that everything is checkable with film, and that that film will help us solve all crimes. Or that, at least, we can look at pictures of the criminals on their way to commit that crime, and wonder with ghoulish regret, why nobody stopped them when in hindsight it’s so obvious.
