Prostitutes and clients carouse: Pictures of inequality?

Thinking about Gender Equality, take a look at these non-contemporary depictions of prostitution. In contrast to today’s pictures of female victims in chains, older portrayals often showed a social interaction: sex sellers and buyers, often carousing. That all the scenes took place in class-ridden, sexist societies is indisputable, but other elements can be perceived, too. In the first three pictures, men and women appear to be having the same social experience – by which I mean there is no obvious message about power , is there?

The following shows the interaction said to epitomise the inequality of the prostitution relationship: a man eyeing several women in order to choose one. This is the image that drives some people crazy.

Does the same commercial relationship drive anyone crazy when customer and worker are both men?

    WONDERFUL!!!

I have no idea where you get such images, but I’m enjoying a lot with them. Yeah, as u say the first ones depict women and men having a good time: that’s the reality of prostution many times.

As a john, I really appreciate the interaction with sex workers. The kind of prostitution that is just to choose a girl and fuck her is so limited for me. That’s why I am usually with girls from the street instead of going to a club or an apartment.

Btw, I perceive many “other elementes”. For example, did u notice that in third picture it seems as the woman is robbing the man? Yes, I’m sure, hehe. Many of the girls I know do the same, and I celebrate it.

And in the first of all, three girls are pursuing a bad-looking man. My beloved girls also like to fight, hahaha.

Beautiful images. I was an art major in college and in my Anthro and Art History classes I remember being struck by the casual depiction of prostitution in paintings from the ancient world up through at least the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

The only thing I would say, I don’t know specifically about the images you selected, but the images I studied were commissioned and painted by men. So they would have a male bias, which may or may not be close to the truth.

However, that being said… In my own experiences with prostitution, it’s much closer to the images you selected than the frantic and sensationalist news reports. Reports that would lead you to believe all prostitutes are underage, exploited, and in need of rescuing.
